Johannesburg – The murder case of media personality Warrick Stock, widely known as DJ Warras, took a new turn this week after the State withdrew charges against one of the two suspects initially arrested, leaving 44-year-old Victor Majola as the sole accused currently before the court.
Police arrested a man and a woman at a hostel in Soweto on Monday in connection with the killing. However, during court proceedings, prosecutors confirmed that the case against the female suspect had been dropped due to insufficient evidence.
Stock was fatally shot outside the Zambesi House building in Johannesburg’s CBD, where he had been contracted to oversee and enforce security at the premises. His killing sent shockwaves through both the media industry and the city’s private security sector.
Investigators previously indicated that up to three people were suspected to have been involved in the attack, including one individual described as having dreadlocks. At this stage, only Majola remains formally charged.
Majola appeared in court on Wednesday, attempting to conceal his identity by covering his face with a scarf and the hood of his jacket. Presiding Magistrate Simon Radasi ordered him to remove the items to allow for proper identification and instructed him to sit upright during proceedings.
The State prosecutor read the charges into the record, confirming that Majola faces a charge of premeditated murder, as well as conspiracy to commit murder.
“The State is opposed to bail, as this is a Schedule 6 offence,” the prosecutor told the court.
The case was postponed to 6 January, when Majola is expected to return to court for a formal bail application.
