Limpopo — Police in Limpopo are searching for six suspects who carried out a daylight robbery at Tarentaal Airport in Letsitele, during which gold and copper were stolen and security guards were disarmed.
The robbery occurred on Friday around 09:30, when a 26-year-old security officer from Gauteng arrived to collect gold and copper parcels on behalf of a private security company. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), six men wearing balaclavas approached the officer as he walked toward a truck. The suspects disarmed two security guards and made off with approximately 21.276 kilograms of gold and copper.
The suspects fled in a grey Ford Bantam bakkie and a white Hyundai Getz. During the escape, police recovered the officers’ firearms and live ammunition that had been dropped by the suspects.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, provincial police spokesperson, said the suspects are considered armed and dangerous and urged anyone with information to assist police. A business robbery case has been opened, and the Hawks (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation) are investigating.
Ledwaba encouraged members of the public to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111, visit their nearest police station, or use the My SAPS App to provide tips. Information can be submitted anonymously.
