Gauteng — In a decisive blow to the illicit trade network, the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit, working hand-in-glove with brand protectors and Gauteng wardens, dismantled a thriving counterfeit goods operation in Tembisa and Wierdabrug on Tuesday.
The joint raid uncovered a stockpile of fake products — from counterfeit cellphone accessories and toy knock-offs to labels destined for bogus consumables — with an estimated street value of R2,686,600.
Authorities say the sting was no lucky break, but the result of sustained intelligence-driven policing aimed at stripping criminal syndicates of their profit chains.
“This operation underscores our unflinching commitment to protect consumers, safeguard legitimate businesses, and crush intellectual property crime,” Gauteng Police officials stated.
Beyond the price tag, law enforcement warns the public that counterfeit goods are not just an economic menace — they can be a silent safety hazard in homes, especially when it comes to toys and consumables.
The bust adds momentum to Gauteng’s broader campaign to #StopIllicitTrade, sending a clear signal: counterfeiters are running out of hiding places.
