Knysna: The recent sighting of the elusive Knysna elephant has ignited exhilaration and pride among residents of the Garden Route and beyond. Captured on video and in photographs at a farmland within the Knysna Forest, this rare encounter has brought attention to the majestic creature that has long evaded direct human interaction.

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has been monitoring the Knysna elephant using discreet, non-invasive camera traps, which have successfully captured her presence every few weeks without interrupting her natural behaviors. JP Louw, SANParks spokesperson, urges the public to celebrate this remarkable animal with responsibility. “We encourage people to avoid revealing the elephant’s exact location or attempting to track or approach her,” Louw stated. “Such actions could pose risks both to her safety and to those who might pursue her.”

As part of its commitment to wildlife conservation, SANParks is currently conducting a comprehensive risk assessment to determine the best management strategies for the Knysnaelephant. This ongoing process aims to balance sound scientific principles with conservation efforts, keeping all relevant stakeholders engaged. “Once we complete this comprehensive assessment, we will ensure that the findings are communicated publicly and transparently,” Louw assured.

Louw further explained the characteristics of the Knysnaelephant, underscoring her avoidance of human encounters. “The Knysna elephant, scientifically known as LoxodontaAfricana, is the same species found throughout South Africa. She is notably evasive and tends to avoid people. Historical data indicates that her behavior changes when she is followed; she alters her speed and direction,” he elaborated. “Camera footage indicates that she remains relaxed in low human-use areas, but we’ve observed elevated stress hormones in her dung when she’s being pursued by humans.”

The excitement surrounding the Knysna elephant serves as a reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation and the need for respectful coexistence with nature. As the community remains captivated by her presence, SANParks continues to lead the charge in protecting this iconic symbol of the Garden Route.
