President Cyril Ramaphosa has sworn in Professor Firoz Cachalia as Acting Minister of Police, following explosive corruption allegations against incumbent Minister Senzo Mchunu.

The appointment, made in terms of Section 91(3)(c) of the Constitution, was officially announced today by the Presidency.

Cachalia is no stranger to the security and justice sectors. A seasoned lawyer and former Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, he brings a wealth of experience to the role at a time of mounting national tension.

He took the Oath of Office this morning and now assumes control of the country’s police service amid a storm of public scrutiny and political pressure.

South Africa’s law enforcement institutions have been rocked following a high-profile press briefing by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The briefing implicated members of the judiciary, senior politicians, and top-ranking police officials in a far-reaching corruption scandal.
