**East London** – In a bold move to ensure consumer safety and regulatory compliance, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCM) launched a comprehensive Spaza Shop Compliance Drive today, which included a series of coordinated raids in East London’s Central Business District.
BCM Municipal Health Services Manager, Khanya Bisholo, praised the success of the day’s operations, stating, “These raids are essential not only for enforcing the law but also for ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. By addressing non-compliance at these establishments, we protect our citizens from potential health risks.”
Today’s focused raid primarily targeted salons, with a total of 21 establishments inspected. The operation resulted in the arrest of more than 30 salon owners and employees, while BCM Law Enforcement, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Human Rights and Missing Persons Unit, apprehended 35 individuals identified as illegal foreigners.
In addition to salon inspections, the operation extended to local food premises, where several establishments were found lacking in compliance requirements, particularly regarding the employment of undocumented foreigners. As a result, numerous businesses faced immediate closures.
In a subsequent crackdown on non-compliance, the Local Economic Development and Fire Departments played a crucial role by revoking business licenses, while Law Enforcement issued three Section 56 notices. Furthermore, fines totaling R3500 were imposed for operating unlicensed vehicles.
“A unified approach was key in these operations,” Bisholo added. “Our collaborative work with various stakeholders, including law enforcement and health services, showcases our commitment to upholding public safety standards.”
The raid was supported by a host of stakeholders, including BCM Municipal Health Services, BCM Local Economic Development, BCM Law Enforcement, Fire Services, Disaster Management, the South African Police Services, the Bargaining Council, BCM Communications, Studio Glem Foundation, Human Rights & Missing Persons Unit, and BCM Legal Services.
With today’s compliance drive marking a significant step in regulatory enforcement, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality aims to continue its commitment to creating a safe and compliant business environment for all its residents.
