Commissioners Kenneth Zwelibanzi Mkhwanazi and Esther Nkosazana Mkhwanazi present a compelling blend of Christian scholarship, pastoral leadership, and practical marriage ministry in their latest work, Reclaiming the Christian Tradition of Ukuphakamisa. With over twenty-eight years of marriage and more than two decades of ministry experience, the couple brings a deeply personal and academic perspective to the subject of faith, family, and Christian praxis.

Their profound journey is not just theoretical; it embodies a lived experience that seamlessly integrates cultural traditions with contemporary Christian theology. Drawing heavily from African Christian traditions, particularly the very tradition the book seeks to reclaim, Ukuphakamisa, the authors offer an insightful theological engagement that is both contextually relevant and spiritually enriching. Their establishment of the El-Elyon Praise Fellowship Church in 2003 stands as a testament to their commitment to nurturing spiritual growth within African Christian communities. Here, they continue their roles as preachers, teachers, and pastors devoted to biblical teaching, spiritual formation, pastoral care, and contextual theology.

What sets this work apart is the authors’ expansive ministry footprint. Beyond church leadership, Commissioners Mkhwanazi serve as motivational speakers and revivalists, addressing diverse audiences with themes of spiritual renewal, moral formation, and family life. Their hands-on experience is especially evident in their dedicated counseling work, which focuses on marriage preparation, stability, and conflict resolution. Their practical approach is informed by their status as registered Marriage Officers, collaborating with South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs to integrate legal, pastoral, and ethical aspects of marriage.

The individual academic and professional backgrounds of both commissioners further enrich their work. Commissioner Kenneth holds a Diploma in Theology from World Harvest Theological College and a Diploma in Business Studies from the Institute of Business Studies. He brings over twenty-four years of experience in retail business management, developing expertise in people management, conflict resolution, stock control, and sales leadership. This blend of theological training and practical management experience enriches his approach to church leadership, pastoral administration, and community engagement.

Commissioner Esther complements this with a Diploma in Management Assistance from Nkangala FET College and has completed Level 4 Early Childhood Development at Siyathela FET College. She is a registered member of the South African Council of Educators (SACE) and holds accreditation in Medical and Community Chaplaincy by HWSETA. This robust academic and professional foundation supports her diverse roles in Christian education, pastoral care, and community outreach.

Among their many milestones, the Commissioners were officially appointed as Marriage Commissioners in January 2023 and ordained by Bishop Dununu Msibi of the Church of Warriors for Christ in December 2022. Furthermore, they published Reclaiming the Christian Tradition of Ukuphakamisa in December 2025, marking a significant contribution to Christian literature. Their establishment and continuous leadership of El-Elyon Praise Fellowship Church since 2003 demonstrate a sustained commitment to spiritual leadership and community building.

Overall, Commissioners Kenneth and Esther Mkhwanazi’s contribution through Reclaiming the Christian Tradition of Ukuphakamisa offers a holistic and transformative perspective on marriage and faith. It is a valuable resource for Christian leaders, pastoral counselors, couples, and anyone seeking to understand the intricate relationship between faith, tradition, and family life in an African context. By sharing both scholarly and pastoral wisdom, they inspire a renewed appreciation for the power of Christian praxis in everyday life.
