Germiston – Three pupils were left with minor injuries after a scholar transport minibus collided with a sedan on Tuesday morning in Germiston, Gauteng, authorities said. The collision occurred along Kingfisher Avenue in Elspark and involved a Toyota Quantum scholar transporter and a Volkswagen sedan.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), emergency services were alerted at about 7:31 am, prompting a prompt response from fire and rescue teams from both the Wadeville and Vosloorus fire stations.
DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi confirmed the scholar transport was carrying nine learners from different schools around the city when the crash took place. Three of the learners sustained minor injuries, while the remaining six, including the vehicle’s driver, were unharmed. The driver of the sedan was also not injured in the incident.
Emergency responders reported that no occupants were trapped in either vehicle upon their arrival. The three pupils who were hurt were transported by a private ambulance to a nearby medical facility for further assessment and treatment.
The collision comes on the heels of a deadly scholar transport crash in Vanderbijlpark earlier in the week that claimed the lives of 12 learners, drawing nationwide attention to learner transport safety. Gauteng authorities have been responding to that tragedy with investigations and increased scrutiny of scholar transport operations in the province.
In the Germiston crash, local officials reiterated the importance of road safety and vigilance, especially during peak school travel hours. Parents and commuters are reminded to exercise caution around scholar transport vehicles and to report any concerns about driving behaviour or transport conditions to the relevant authorities.
