Afrika Mayibuye Movement Eyes 2026 Elections

By Duncan Mnisi

Floyd Shivambu, leader of the newly formed Afrika Mayibuye Movement (AMM), has announced the party’s intention to contest both local and national elections in South Africa.

At a media briefing, Shivambu described the AMM as more than a new political party — a platform rooted in South Africa’s history of struggle and a collective vision for a better future.

“We are diverse individuals,” he said. “But today we are more mature, knowledgeable, and experienced. Listening to our people has given us clarity and a unified vision for tomorrow.”

Rejecting traditional hierarchical leadership models, Shivambu outlined an inclusive structure with a president, two deputy presidents, a secretary-general, deputies, and other key roles.

He said this approach promotes shared decision-making and moves away from individual dominance.

On elections, Shivambu was emphatic, “We’re not just contesting for the sake of it; our goal is to win.”

The AMM plans to field candidates in every ward during the 2026 local government elections, with ambitions of securing victories across municipalities and entrenching itself as a strong political force.

The movement draws inspiration from milestones in South Africa’s political history the 1909 National Convention that birthed the Union of South Africa, the founding of the South African Native Congress in 1912, and the adoption of the Freedom Charter in 1955.

It also honors the Black Consciousness Movement and leaders such as Winifred Kgware of Thaba Nchu.

According to Shivambu, the AMM’s registration under the Electoral Commission Act of 1996 gives it the legal and strategic footing to participate meaningfully in the democratic process.

Looking ahead, he struck a confident tone,“Our objective is clear to contest all wards in 2026 and win across municipalities.”

With this declaration, the Afrika Mayibuye Movement positions itself as a new force determined to reshape South Africa’s political landscape through collective effort and strategic governance.
