Mbombela:The Mpumalanga provincial government is embracing a progressive approach to budgeting that transcends the traditional annual cycle, thereby facilitating cohesion in infrastructure development throughout the region. This strategic direction was emphasized during the recent Medium Term Expenditure Committee (MTEC) hearings, where various departments presented their financial plans and outlined budget constraints.
MEC for Finance, Bonakele Majuba, articulated the essence of this innovative planning method, stating, “This framework not only enables us to map out our infrastructural projects such as the Mpumalanga Food Market and Middleburg Hospital over several years but also reinforces our commitment to economic transformation.”
By implementing a long-term vision for budget allocation, the provincial government is poised to unlock new avenues for societal development and economic growth, thus aligning with the goals defined in Mpumalanga’s Medium-Term Development Plan.
The MTEC, created from this strategic framework, plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability and responsiveness within governance. This committee is firmly rooted in the Constitutional principles of consultative budgeting. In this spirit, the Department of Education recently participated in the hearings, revealing their budgetary plans and the challenges they face. Currently, they report a spending rate of 50.1%, along with commitments to minimize unplanned, irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure moving forward.
As the hearings progress, the focus will soon shift to the Mpumalanga Regional and Training Trust and the Department of Health. The government’s commitment to transparency and efficiency signifies a robust step toward sustainable economic development in the province.
The strategic planning and execution of the budget are seen as paramount for realizing the developmental aspirations of Mpumalanga. The long-term approach embraced by the provincial government underlines their dedication to building a province that indeed works for all its residents.
