Khayelitsha- Calls for AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo to apologise have intensified following controversial remarks he made during the EFF’s 12th anniversary rally in Khayelitsha.
In a joint statement, the Amadungwana and Hlanga royal houses condemned the King’s utterances, describing them as “disgusting” and unbecoming of a monarch.
Dalindyebo, known for his provocative rhetoric, once again drew criticism for targeting Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane in his speech.
“The royal houses of Amadungwana and AmaQhiya are dismayed that whenever the King is given a platform, he uses it to attack Premier Oscar Mabuyane. This behavior is totally unacceptable,” read the statement.
One of the most widely criticised remarks included a crude metaphor in isiXhosa, loosely translated as: “The AbaThembu pigs are hungry and will feast on Oscar’s buttocks.” The comment has been labelled vulgar and degrading.
Advocate Andile Mini, Secretary of the ANC in the Chris Hani region, also penned an open letter condemning the King’s conduct. Mini described the remarks as vulgar and questioned the values being promoted under Dalindyebo’s leadership.
“Dear King, you have the right to criticise those in power, as does any citizen. However, using crude, inappropriate, lascivious, and degrading language for populist appeal at a political rally is unacceptable,” wrote Mini. “This behavior deserves a response not just from me, but from all who value respect, dignity, and the decorum expected among AbaThembu and within broader society.”
Public response to the controversy has been mixed, with some defending the King’s right to speak his mind, while others call for accountability and a public apology.
