Kuruman – A major retail landmark is rising in one of the most economically powerful regions in South Africa. Segonyana Mall, a modern and family-focused shopping centre, is set to open its doors on 27 November 2025 in Kuruman, located in the Northern Cape’s high-earning John Taolo Gaetsewe District.
The development promises to bring a fresh wave of convenience, style, and economic momentum to an area long recognised for its remarkable mining-driven wealth.

A Long-Awaited Development Finally Becomes Reality

The mall is being developed by the Moolman Group, a respected leader in rural and regional retail developments. Ground was officially broken in December 2024 after years of planning, community consultation, and multiple delays. The project is now full steam ahead, marking one of the biggest retail investments the town has seen in decades.

The 11,000 sqm mall is designed to deliver a full-spectrum shopping experience for families, commuters, and local workers. With its prime location near the town’s main taxi rank, Segonyana Mall is expected to quickly become “a dynamic new retail node at the centre of town life,” according to the developers.

A Strong Retail Mix Anchored by National Favourites

Segonyana Mall brings an impressive lineup of national retailers, combining food essentials, banking, fashion, and lifestyle brands under one roof.
Its anchor tenants Shoprite and Boxer are joined by a mix of much-loved South African staples, including:

  • Choice Clothing
  • Exact
  • Express Store
  • Markhams
  • Mr Price

Banking & Services:

Liquor & Essentials:

This retail mix is tailored to meet the everyday needs of residents while offering modern conveniences previously limited in the area.

Boosting Local Jobs and Economic Growth

Beyond shopping convenience, Segonyana Mall is expected to play a vital economic role. Hundreds of jobs are being created during construction, with many more permanent roles to follow once the mall opens.
Local contractors, service providers, and small businesses are also benefiting from increased activity — a much-needed boost for regional development.

Located in One of South Africa’s Richest Areas

What truly sets this project apart is its location. Kuruman sits within the Segonyana Local Municipality, which forms part of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality — a region known for exceptionally high earnings driven by mining.

Just 35 minutes away lies the Gamagara Local Municipality, home to the mining town of Kathu, near Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine.
According to the latest data from National Treasury and SARS:

  • Gamagara is the highest-earning municipality in South Africa, with an average taxable income of R518,808.
  • Johannesburg, in second place, trails behind at R484,671.

Gamagara has topped income rankings before, recording the highest per capita spending in both 2016 and 2022 — a pattern attributed to the inflow of skilled, high-income mining professionals.

The municipality is also financially resilient, generating R90 of every R100 spent locally, making it one of the country’s most self-sustaining regions.

Nearby, Joe Morolong Local Municipality, also part of the same district, ranks as the fourth highest-earning area, with an average taxable income of R427,977.

Despite being the least populated province, the Northern Cape houses several of South Africa’s top-earning regions — making Segonyana Mall’s strategic location all the more significant.

A New Retail Era for Kuruman

With its strategic position, strong retailer lineup, and proximity to the wealthiest households in the country, Segonyana Mall is set to reshape Kuruman’s retail landscape.
The mall promises not only a modern shopping experience but also new opportunities, new jobs, and a renewed sense of economic momentum for the broader district.

As the countdown to 27 November 2025 begins, excitement is building — and Kuruman is ready to welcome its newest retail landmark.
