Bushbuckridge – In the heart of Mpumalanga, 31-year-old Mikhenso Mathebula, better known by his nickname “Mr. Bite Once,” is proving that humble beginnings can lead to inspiring journeys.
Raised in the dusty streets of Bushbuckridge, Mathebula has reshaped his life through resilience and determination.

His entrepreneurial story began modestly. “I started my small business with just the SASSA R350 grant, which is now R370, by making pies,” he recalls.

Before finding his footing in business, Mathebula tried his luck as a stand-up comedian and once worked as a garden boy. “Comedy didn’t work out for me, and it wasn’t sustainable,” he admits.

Seeking stability, he turned to entrepreneurship during the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as a small fast-food venture has grown into a source of pride and a livelihood that supports him and his family.

Today, Mathebula is a familiar figure at the Thulamahashe taxi rank, where he sells his pies with unmatched energy and charisma. Known for his humor and customer care, he says:

“I prioritize my customers’ comfort; that’s what makes them smile.”

His unique marketing style, mixing humor with the vibrant Xitsonga veneq language, has recently gone viral on social media. One of his popular catchphrases includes:
“Leyi i pie leyi uyi tastaka, u nga se yi luma. Yi na na medical aid—loko wo ti luma, ku ta na helicopter ku ku yisa exibedlele!”

(“This is a pie you can taste before even biting it. It comes with medical aid—if you bite your tongue, a helicopter will rush you to the hospital!”)

Looking ahead, Mathebula dreams of expanding his business. He hopes to one day open a restaurant that serves dishes reflecting his community’s culture and tastes.

“I want to grow my business and be a living testimony—from the taxi ranks to riches,” he says, embodying the spirit of perseverance and hope.
