Mbombela: Mpumalanga Matric results have  been improved by 0,2%, the province obtained 77% for 2023 compared to 76.8% which was obtained in 2022. These sparked mixed  reactions from political parties in the province  Democratic Alliance MPL Jane Sithole congratulated the learners for putting their best foot forward in making sure that they emulate their predecessors by the slight margin “ I would like to congratulate our learners, we have seen districts and schools  doing  well despite challenges like loadshedding and infrastructure backlogs in Mpumalanga however our learners were able to pull through. One of our concerns is that we  have high level of dropouts in our schools  and our government doesn’t have system to track the whereabouts of these learners, in the past two years we lost more than 25000 learners in our schools, now the question is where are those learners? I think our government must focus on learner retention and fast track infrastructure backlogs. We have learners who are sitting at home because they can’t be admitted in schools due to lack of space. Our government must utilize all the infrastructure budget last year we have returned R395 Million to treasury whilst we have schools like Mkhondo Boarding school which is taking forever to be completed” said Sithole.

Economic Freedom Fighters Chief Whip in Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature Ntsako Mkhabela came out with gun blazing saying they can’t celebrate 0,2 percent pass rate improvement, “ We have achieved 0,2 percent there is  nothing to celebrate there, for example Bohlabela District has declined from 79% to 69%, we are not surprised because the department lack  planning capacity we cannot come here year in and year out to celebrate mediocrity at least we should strive to increase our results by 1%” concluded Mkhabela.

Meanwhile  ACTIONSA Provincial Chairperson Thoko Mashiane accentuated the fact learners don’t need glamorous schools to do well “ though we are number eight nationally, am glad that learners from our schools in rural areas have done well, you don’t need glamorous schools to get ahead in life you just need a conducive learning environment” explained Mashiane. The Executive Mayor of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality Cllr Mhlonishwa Masilela expressed his excitement on the sidelines  matric results announcement in Mbombela , “ I am excited that we are number one both at municipal level and  the circuit level (Steve Tshwete 2 is an overall best performing circuit in the Province after recording a 91.1% pass rate), I say congratulations to our learners and to our teachers for the excellent work they have done. Equally important important I want to thank our social partners like Thungela, RMC and 4 SAI Military Base for all those extra lessons camp that they have been conducting over the weekends for the betterment of our learners. I hope this energy  will rub off to other social partners in order for all our schools to obtain 100% pass rate” he said
