Kwa-Mhlanga:Following a recent article by Timeless News about bickering among some staff members and certain section of School Governing Body (SGB) office bearers over governance and infrastructure at Dumelani Primary School in Moloto, Kwamhlanga, the Mpumalanga Department of Education has stepped in to clear the air.

Mr Jasper Zwane, spokesperson for Mpumalanga Department of Education said a meeting held recently with the School Governing Body (SGB), teachers and all stakeholders has since resolved most of the issues.

As reported previously, some aggrieved SGB members had accused acting Kwamhlanga circuit manager and the Nkgangala District (education) of suspending five members of the SGB without following proper procedures.

Zwane said, “The SGB members were not suspended but the officers are elected every 12 months. The initial reelection of office bearers was inappropriately done as it was facilitated by the departmental head.

“This made the department not to allow unprocedurally elected office bearers to be signatories. The principal later facilitated the process and they are now recognised and would assume their positions of being finance committee members.”

The entire SGB members have since assumed responsibility and the department would continue to monitor the situation, he added.

On the allegations that windows, roofs, doors and buildings at Dumelani Primary School were dilapidated, the provincial education department said it has made assessment and found the school was allowed to do minor maintenance within the school allocation.

“The school carries out minor maintenance which constitutes 13% of the budget,” Zwane said.
