Secunda:The Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport MEC, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu has learnt with great disappointment about today’s incidence whereby female officials were attacked by a group of taxi operators on Friday. The female Transport Inspectorate officials were conducting their daily operations along the R546 road between Embalenhle and Evander in the early morning. At about 08h00 more than 50 taxis were impounded for failing to comply with the National Land Transport Act (NLTA).

It is alleged that a group of taxi operators who were not happy about the law enforcement operation that was conducted, mobilized and attacked the traffic officials and further set alight two vehicles belonging to the unit. Three vehicles were also damaged during the attack. One officer was disarmed and her service firearm was then taken from her by the group of taxi operators.

Ndlovu has strongly condemned the unruly conduct by the taxi operators. “The department will not allow a situation whereby lawlessness individual can do as they please and disrupt any officials that are trying to enforce the laws of our roads in order to ensure safety and compliance on our roads.” Ndlovu warned. He further said “No one can justify such brutality and senseless torching of our government vehicles and physical attack on our female transport inspectors conducting their official business”. Ndlovu concluded by saying “I strongly urge all communities and specifically taxi operators to condemn and reject this violence. Further than that I call upon on our law enforcement agencies to do everything in their powers to arrest this volatile situation and act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrators of this criminality.
