With just 87 days to go until the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, uncertainty is growing off the pitch — but Iran national football team officials insist they are still heading to the tournament.

Speculation around Iran’s participation intensified after escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel, which has gripped the country in recent weeks and sparked global concern.

In a brief post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump suggested it may not be appropriate for Iran to take part in the global showpiece.

“The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” he wrote.

The remarks quickly drew a firm response from the Iranian camp, who pushed back against the idea that politics should influence participation in the tournament governed by FIFA.

“The World Cup is a historic and international event and its governing body is FIFA – not any individual country,” the team said in a statement.

They also pointed out that Iran had already secured qualification through strong performances, underlining their intention to compete on football’s biggest stage.

Meanwhile, the Asian Football Confederation says it has received clear communication from the federation that the team plans to honour its commitments.

AFC general secretary Windsor John acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation but confirmed the current stance.

“At the end of the day, it’s the federation who should decide if they’re playing, and as of today, the federation has told us that they are going to the World Cup.”

With the tournament fast approaching, attention is now turning to whether rising geopolitical tensions will spill into the sporting arena. For now, despite the extraordinary circumstances, Iran appears determined to take its place on the world stage.
