South Africa The Toyota Vitz has made a notable leap in the new-vehicle market, breaking into thetop five best-selling passenger cars in South Africa for January 2026 — a first for the budget hatchback and a sign of shifting buyer preferences early in the year.

Sales Momentum Builds in 2026: According to official industry figures, new vehicle sales in South Africa grew 7.5 % year-on-year in January 2026, with total new passenger vehicle sales rising to 37 190 units.

While traditional favourites like the Volkswagen Polo Vivo reclaimed the top spot, the Vitz impressed by climbing to 4th place on the monthly bestseller list with 1 514 units sold — its highest monthly tally to date. A significant portion of these sales came via the rental channel, which accounted for roughly 44.5 % of Vitz registrations in January.

What This Means for South African Buyers

Segment reshuffle: Traditional players such as the Toyota Corolla Cross fell out of the top ten, underscoring how quickly things can change in SA’s dynamic vehicle market.

Entry-level hatchbacks remain strong: The performance of the Vitz, Polo Vivo and Suzuki Swift shows that buyers are still prioritising affordability and practicality in 2026.

Rental fleet influence: With a significant share of sales coming through rental channels, manufacturers are finding that these fleets can meaningfully boost rankings — particularly for accessible, economical models like the Vitz.
