Johannesburg — Uber has officially switched on its first electric ride-hailing service in South Africa, marking a major milestone in the country’s shift toward cleaner, smarter urban mobility. The new service, which launches under the Uber Electric banner, is rolling out initially in Johannesburg, with plans to expand to Cape Town and Durban as the fleet grows.

According to Uber, the introduction of electric rides forms part of the company’s wider goal of becoming a zero-emissions mobility platform by 2040. South Africa is one of the first African markets to receive the dedicated EV service, signalling Uber’s confidence in the country’s growing demand for sustainable transport options.

The service is powered by a small but expanding fleet of fully electric vehicles. Riders selecting Uber Electric can expect quieter rides, lower carbon impact, and—depending on location—more competitive pricing as Uber tests incentives to boost adoption.

Uber SA confirmed that the company is partnering with local energy and charging operators to ensure efficient fleet uptime, addressing the challenges of charging access and grid reliability. More charging hubs are expected to be added through 2025.

Industry analysts say Uber’s move could accelerate EV visibility in South Africa, encouraging both private consumers and fleet operators to follow suit. With rising fuel costs and growing environmental awareness among riders, the timing appears ideal for a transition to electric mobility.

For now, the company will monitor demand in Johannesburg, refine the model, and expand as more EVs enter the local supply chain.
