Johannesburg – Budget crossovers dominate South Africa’s first-time new-car market, and since 2021 the Renault Kiger has carved out a massive share of that space. With more than 28 000 units sold in under five years, the little French crossover has become a go-to choice for cost-conscious buyers. Now, for 2025, Renault has refreshed the Kiger with updated styling, a simplified model range and pricing that starts at a highly aggressive R219 999.
Why the Kiger Matters
South Africans are not easily impressed, yet the Kiger has resonated strongly — especially the non-turbocharged models, which account for 15 000 of its total sales. While turbo engines continue to dominate marketing hype, the market has proven that value, reliability and affordability still dictate buying decisions.
But competition is fierce. Hyundai’s Exter, the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Suzuki Fronx and Tata Punch all offer strong value propositions. Renault’s answer is a smarter, more streamlined Kiger family — now officially SA’s most affordable crossover — designed to stay at the front of the pack.
Simplified 2025 Line-up
Renault has trimmed the Kiger range from seven to three derivatives, introducing new naming conventions:
- Evolution
- Techno
- Iconic (launching later)
At the media launch, Renault showcased the Evolution and Techno variants. The Techno, expected to be the volume seller, adds 16-inch wheels, LED headlamps and keyless entry.

The entry-level Evolution is manual only, but far from basic. It packs:
- 8-inch touchscreen
- Wired smartphone mirroring
- Reverse camera
- Steering-wheel controls
- Electric windows all round
- Electric mirrors
Renault clearly understands the South African consumer: value first.
Design: Bolder and More Modern
The 2025 facelift gives the Kiger a more assertive and contemporary look.
Exterior updates include:
- Redesigned front bumper, bonnet and skid plate
- New rear bumper
- Standard LED taillamps across the range
- New Renault corporate badge
- Model name spelled out below the logo
In Techno trim, the refreshed alloy wheels give the Kiger a noticeably sportier stance.
Inside, the cabin receives visual improvements such as dual-tone seat upholstery and a two-tone dashboard. Hard plastics are still present — expected in this segment — but they feel durable rather than cheap.
One highlight is the cooled glovebox, a clever, lifestyle-friendly feature rarely seen in this price bracket.
Space remains one of the Kiger’s strengths:
- Rear knee room of 222 mm
- 405-litre boot
- 50 kg-rated roof rails
- 205 mm of ground clearance for light adventure travel
Driving Impressions
Let’s be clear: the naturally aspirated 1.0-litre engine’s 53 kW and 96 Nm do not make for brisk performance. With two adults on board, the Kiger requires firm throttle inputs to build speed, and overtakes must be planned.
However, prospective buyers in this segment don’t expect hot-hatch acceleration. In everyday urban driving, the engine is perfectly adequate and easy to manage.
The five-speed manual gearbox can feel vague in the lower gears, but improves noticeably from third gear upward. Once you get used to the shift pattern, the car becomes easy to drive smoothly. Importantly, the manual is still the better option over the AMT, which tends to make small engines feel lazier than they are.
Where the Kiger impresses is in ride comfort. The damping is excellent for a budget crossover, noise levels are well contained, and the 16-inch wheels provide stable road manners even on rougher surfaces. For long-distance travel, the Kiger feels far more confident than its price suggests.

Summary
The Kiger has always appealed to young families and budget-conscious adventurers, and the 2025 update strengthens its position. It still offers exceptional value, now packaged in a sharper design with features that genuinely matter in day-to-day use.
Renault also teased the upcoming 1.0-litre turbo model — a more powerful derivative that should attract buyers wanting extra punch without leaving the value bracket.
For everyone else?
The refreshed, naturally aspirated 2025 Renault Kiger remains one of the smartest buys in South Africa’s budget crossover segment.
