Oshoek: Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), Vusi Shongwe has applauded the members of Traffic Interventon Unit (TIU), within the department for the separate arrests of four foreign nationals who were in possession of large amounts of dagga.
The suspects were arrested on the N17 toll road towards Oshoek Border Post on Wednesday 8 March, immediately after crossing from Eswatini to the country.
According to DCSSL, after crossing the border, the suspects were caught by TIU members who were at the time doing their routine traffic law enforcement on the road, when the minibus taxis they were travelling in were stopped by the TIU members.
In another case, a suspect believed to be Mozambican foreign national, was also nabbed with dagga all over his body.
All the suspects are males and they have since been handed over to the police for further processing.
MEC Shongwe has praised the team saying that their actions continue to play a role in ensuring that traffic offenders and crime suspects are brought to book.
He added that the country does not have problem with foreign nationals but when they are here they must respect the country’s laws.
“We are not a banana republic. Every person who wishes to visit the country, should do so within the ambit of the law. We will always frown upon and harshly deal with those who do the opposite of what our law requires irrespective of where they come from,” said the MEC.
Shongwe said what the TIU did was commendable and the suspects should be made to face the full consequences of the actions.
He has also urged the taxi operators and communities residing along the border to play their part in curbing cross border crimes by reporting any suspicious people immediately to the police.
Shongwe also promised that more efforts will be made to empower TIU and traffic law enforcement with resources to enable them to respond adequately to rising number of road crashes and to also enforce the law.
