NDM LAUNCHES ECONOMIC ENTITY

Middleburg: The Nkangala District Municipality (NDM) has on Thursday 11 March launched the Nkangala Economic Development Agency (NEDA) at the Mayor’s Parlour in Middleburg.

The launch was aiming to introduce NEDA Board to members of the community and to further communicate its objectives and programmes towards improving service delivery in the district municipality.

The agency is a municipal entity of NDM, established in terms of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, (Act 32 of 2000, as amended) (“MSA”), intended for economic growth in the district municipality.

According to NDM, the strategic objectives of NEDA are among others to attract major investments into NDM, position the district municipality as a destination of choice for investments, initiate and implement high impact projects that will create jobs and generate inclusive economic growth.

During the launch, NDM has appointed six non-executive directors to serve on the interim board of NEDA for a period of 12 months, starting from 1 March 2021 to 28 February 2022.

The appointed non-executive interim members were Mr. P Makaba, Mr. M D Xulu, Ms. TS Mohapi, Mr. V Mahlangu, Mr. IE Pilane and Ms. SP Maphumulo.

The interim directors will be responsible for, inter alia, setting strategic direction and ensuring good corporate governance of NEDA. The roles and duties of the individual directors shall consist of the duties as contemplated in Section 93H of the MSA.

The agency will also ensure the participation of residents with more bias towards previously disadvantaged individuals in strategic and high impact businesses. It was also mandated to maximize on the mining opportunities that prevail within the municipality.
