A drive to provide water access to Emakhazeni communities has received a major boost when Exxaro owned Belfast Coal offered with a 20 000 litre water truck.

The truck worth R1.3 million was handed over to eMakhazeni municipality on 4 August to accelerate the delivery of water to areas with shody access.

Londolani Rampfumedzi, Business Unit Manager for Belfast Coal, said the project seeks to give local people access to portable water which is a necessity for communities to function. “It is through such initiatives that the communities’ likelihoods are restored and sustained,” he said.

He added that the initiative is part of the mine’s donation drive with aim to resolve and tackle social challenges. “This donation drive that started in March 2020 is more and beyond the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) commitments that Exxaro has set aside to invest in the noble role of improving the town of Emakhazeni, in line with Exxaro’s slogan which is to Power Possibility,” Rampfumedzi said. “Exxaro is committed to local economic development and improving the quality of life for the host communities through building trusting relationships with our stakeholders and empowering communities to positively contribute to the Emakhazeni Eco-System and Beyond.”

“To date the mine has donated over R 500 000 in support of the community challenges, which included initiatives that were meant to provide Covid 19 relief grants to the host communities,” he said.

Emakhazeni executive Mayor, T D Ngwenya said the donation came at the right time.  “When we were proceeding with the installation of 20 litres water tanks with stands to every household in the farms to ensure that everyone gets water inside their yard. In cases whereby the houses are scattered a 30 thousand litres of water tank would be installed for the people to have access to water close by,” he said.

“The local municipality will be forever grateful for the delightful work Exxaro is doing for the communities, as it continues uplifting and addressing the needs of the surrounding communities. Thank you very much Exxaro for your positive contribution towards our local communities’ growth and development,” Mayor Ngwenya said.

Cllr Sibusiso Mthimunye (Member of Mayoral Committee), Cynthia Makhubele (Stakeholder Affairs Manager), Cllr TD Ngwenya (Executive Mayor) and Lesta Makhabela (Finance Manager standing in for Business Unit Manager).
