DMRE Hosts a Career Expo for Sekhukhune Learners

Glen Cowie: The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), together with the Department of Education, Hosted a career expo for high school learners around the Sekhukhune District Municipality. The career expo was held on Monday at Matshumane Secondary School in Glen Cowie in the area of Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality. Mr Solomon Phetla DMRE communications officer explained the modality of collaborating with Department of Basic Education “DMRE worked together with the Department of Basic Education to select schools and develop the preferred criteria. The targeted criteria were Grage 9 to 11 learners selected by the Department of Education. We had 18 schools from Sekhukhune area gathered in one school for presentations”. Said Phetla,
The speakers of the day included DMRE Deputy Minister Dr. Nobuhle Nkabane, MEC of Education in the Limpopo province, Polly Boshielo; the speaker of Makhuduthamaga Municipality, Judy Nkgadima Mphelane, and other role players in the education sector. The sole purpose of the career expo was to educate, inform, equip and interact with the learners from various schools in the Sekhukhune district. Learners were provided with information about various career opportunities within the mining and energy sectors.
The Expo encouraged learners to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. “The department target Maths and Physical science learners because careers such as Mining Engineering require Maths and Science. Department encouraged the learners to do the above subjects to get the opportunity to work in the mining and energy industry”. Said Solomon Phetla
The expo is aimed at assist learners to decide on a proper career from well-informed sources such as the Department of mineral resources and energy, this way learners will know what steps to take when it comes to furthering their studies and where to go when they have attained proper qualifications. “The department through his state-owned entities (SOE) assist the students with jobs opportunities after completed internships program from various mining companies”. explained Phetla
The initiative is part of department’s contribution towards nation building and recognising that no learner should be left behind. The intervention aims to promote career development initiatives that will translate into empowerment of young people in schools.
